34th Meeting of AFRA Representatives

With the support of IAEA, the African Regional Cooperative Agreement for Research, Development and Training Related to Nuclear Science and Technology (AFRA) held the 34th Meeting of its Representatives on 28 September 2023 on the margins of the General Conference.

Event attendees

This meeting was attended by Ambassadors/Resident Representatives, Ministers and Permanent Secretaries and National Coordinators of AFRA Government Parties. Representatives of donors’ countries and partners also attended. The IAEA Director General officially opened the meeting. He was accompanied by the IAEA DDGs NA and TC who delivered their statements. Algeria was elected as the Chair of the Meeting, thus assuming the chairmanship of AFRA until September 2024. The meeting congratulated the outgoing AFRA Chair (Rwanda) for leading AFRA from 2022 to 2023 and to have successfully organized the AFRA High Level Policy Meeting in December 2022.

The assembled IAEA staff and AFRA Representatives reviewed the programme activities of the last year and adopted the AFRA Annual Report 2022. The meeting also adopted the following recommendations:

  • AFRA Regional Cooperative Framework (RCF) for 2024-2028.
  • Ethiopia to be the host of the 35th AFRA TWGM in 2024.
  • Kenya Nuclear Regulatory Authority recognized as a Regional Designated Centre (RDC) for education and training in radiation protection.
